Description |
01-014-HB In a c1905 photo made from a glass negative, a plantation outbuilding with a prominent bell and rear shed, may have been a storehouse (note lock on the door) or one of a number of craft shops. Slave artisans included carpenters, coopers, blacksmiths, tanners, shoemakers, spinners, wood turners, wheelwrights and harness makers. Buildings such as this were also called "workshops". Note the addition of a hole and metal sheathing for the pipe of a woodstove. According to Jimmy Bessinger this building was located in Barnyard Village just past the last house as you curve to the left going towards the rice mill. This was the rice mill barn. It was torn down and the wood was used to panel the Executive Directors house built in the 1970's. The bell was placed on a post at the bullpen at Bellefield and later moved to the stable yard.
