Aston Knight, Water Color, landscape with man coooking 2010 reframed Conservation glass & matting original frames are archived While no one is certain where this house was located, Richard asked Jimmy Bessinger on 7/24/2019. He believes that it was on Strawberry Hill and that Lois Massey may have lived in it at some time. The house was not standing when Jimmy started working at Hobcaw in 1971. If you are driving east and the Donaldson cemetery is on your right (south), keep going east to where the road forks. If you go right you head towards Hobcaw house. Instead go straight a little and turn left. There are supposedly brick ruins on a hill and this is where this house may have been. Aston Knight (French, 1873-1948) Louis Aston Knight was born in Paris on August 3, 1873, to Daniel Ridgway Knight, an American painter who studied at PAFA. Aston was educated in Europe and started his artistic education with his father before studying with Robert Fleury and Jules Lefebvre, both Romantic painters. Aston exhibited at the 1894 Paris Salon which marked the start of a great career. He received many awards including a Bronze medal in Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, and Gold medals in 1905 and 1906 at the Paris Salon. Aston received the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur in 1924, and was promoted Officier in 1928 before becoming Commandeur in 1934, the highest recognition. Aston was a landscape painter influenced by the Impressionists. He admired Claude Monet whom he visited several times. He admired Monet's garden and created a similar one at his house in Beaumont Le Roger (Normandie). He became famous in the United States, and President Harding bought one of his painting in 1922 to exhibit at the White House. In 1940, in the midst of WWII, Aston and his family left France to live in New York.
