Pen & Ink Sketch, "Grand Dames" Caricatures of different ladies in a Row Georges Goursat (French, 1863-1934) Georges Goursat was born in Périgueux in 1863 into a successful family of grocers and shopkeepers. As the elder son, he helped his father in the family business in Périgueux but after his father died in 1884 Georges dedicated himself to drawing. He participated in the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts de Dordogne in 1888 and 1890. He began drawing people with large heads, but Georges simplified the features and created caricatures. From 1890 to 1896, he lived in Bordeaux, then moved to Marseille. In 1900, Georges, known as Sem since 1886, moved to Paris where he attended horse races, which introduced him to high society that became the subject for his drawings. During WWI, he worked as a war correspondent. Afterwards, he continued his caricatures, but also worked as a publicist. In 1904, he received the title of Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur and was promoted to Officier in 1925. He died in his Parisian home on November 26, 1934.
